Wildflower and Golden Hour Photography Walk at Ferry Hill

For ages 13 and older. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required and limited to 15 participants. This program has a minimum of 6 participants. PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible For just a short time each spring, delicate wildflowers emerge from the forest floor, transforming the woods with vibrant color before quickly fading away. These spring ephemerals take advantage of a brief window of sunlight before the trees leaf out, disappearing just as suddenly as they arrive. Their timing is everything, not just for them, but for the pollinators that depend on their brief appearance. Join us for an early evening walk through the springtime forest at Ferry Hill, where weâll search for these short-lived blooms and take in the beauty of the season. This walk will take place during golden hour, the period before sunset when light is low, soft, and warm, ideal for observation and photography. At Ferry Hill, weâll be walking along a westward-facing slope, and if conditions are right, the golden light from the west will enhance the already stunning beauty of the spring ephemeral wildflowers. At Ferry Hill, we can hope to see Cutleaf Toothwort, Early Saxifrage, Spring Beauty, Dwarf Larkspur, Squirrel Corn, Wild Ginger, Pink Shooting Stars, and Dutchmanâs Breeches. As always, thank you for leaving the wildflowers for all to enjoy. This walk also serves as an experiment in possibly creating a volunteer-led PVAS photography club. The vision for this group is to gather monthly at PVAS preserves, timing walks, when possible, for prime lighting conditions. Participants will enjoy each otherâs company while photographing the beauty of our preserves, sharing tips, encouragement, and inspiration along the way. Photographers of all levels and all types of equipment, including cell phones, are welcome and encouraged. Priscilla, our prospective photography club host, is eager to share her enthusiasm for finding beautiful light, angles, and texture in nature, and for showing how any camera can capture stunning images. Participants will be invited to share their photos with PVAS for potential use on social media, so others can enjoy the special moments and places captured during the walk. Walking Distance: Approximately 2 miles or less. About Laurel: Laurel Schwartz is a PVAS Program Specialist. Since September 2021, she has managed PVASâs 4th Grade Watershed Program. Additionally, she is the Audubon Discovery Camp Director. Laurel is a lifelong Jefferson County resident and Shepherd University graduate.Â She graduated from Shepherd University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and a concentration in Sustainable Resource Management. During the summers between the school year, she worked as a seasonal Park Ranger for both the National Park Service, at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and the Army Corps of Engineers, at Loyalhanna Lake Recreation Area. After graduation, Laurel served an AmeriCorps year (2019-2020) with us as an Environmental Educator.Â Through this role, she fell in love with youth education and nature interpretation. Full Moon Walk at Yankauer Nature Preserve

If the sky is clear, we will hike by the light of the full moon along the trails at Yankauer Nature Preserve. If the evening is cloudy, we will still enjoy an evening stroll as a group. Regardless of the weather, we will enjoy the unique sights, sounds and smells of the nocturnal world together! Please note that Yankauer Nature Preserve is normally open only from dawn to dusk, but is accessible at night through special nighttime events like these. We hope you join us! Walking Distance: 1-1.5 milesPace/Activities: Moderate â steady but able to maintain a conversation. The group will make several stops along the way to regroup and to discuss interesting things we are noticing or thinking about! The Potomac Valley Master Naturalists have installed a memorial bench in honor of Cheryl at Staufferâs Marsh Nature Preserve, one of her favorite places. Cheryl often encouraged others to âslow down, be present, and observe the world around youâ and this event will reflect that through reflections from those who knew her and guided activities that she loved. Join us for a beginner-friendly journey into the world of everyday edible and useful plants!PVAS Host: Susan Wolcott, Emily Gordon $10/person (PVAS members receive a 10% discount). PVMN Continuing Education Credit Eligible Perfect for beginners, this workshop is designed for anyone who isnât yet confident in identifying wild plants. Together, weâll focus on six abundant and useful species: dandelion, nettle and dead nettle, lambâs quarters, violets, and garlic mustard. By learning a few clear identifying features, youâll gain the confidence to recognize these plants wherever you encounter them. Participants will receive a simple handout with key identification tips along with basic culinary, medicinal, and practical uses. Along the way, weâll explore how paying attention to common plants can deepen your connection with the landscape around you. Some of these species are invasive, so learning to identify and harvest them can also help support local ecosystems. Rolling Ridge Conservancy Bird Walk

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=ââ]Join Bill Telfair and Master Naturalist Scot DeGraf for a morning bird walk at Rolling Ridge Conservancy!PVAS Host: Bill Telfair, Scot DeGraf This is a free/donation-based program. For ages 8 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 participants. Explore the habitat and the bird life with others on the gorgeous trails of Rolling Ridge Conservancy, the largest privately-owned wilderness area near Washington DC and along the entire Appalachian Trail. Anyone with an interest in birding is welcome to join trip leaders Bill and Scot as they explore some of the 1500 acres of protected woodlands. These walks are held on the second Tuesday of every month. Click here to see a list of birds seen in past Mays! (Some places may not have an eBird list for that month, so that is a great opportunity for you to add the birds you see at this bird walk!) Rolling Ridge Conservancy welcomes donations, which can either be accepted on the morning of the walk or through their website (https://www.rollingridgeconservancy.org/donate). Please ask Bill or Scot how your donations will help foster their mission. Walking Distance: ~2-3 milesPace/Activities: Leisurely (meandering, many breaks to stop and observe)Exposure: Forested with dense canopy coverTerrain: Earthen trail with some hilly, rocky sections that could be slippery when wet Mostly flat, some gentle slopesRestroom: Restrooms are available for this program.Parking/Where to Meet: Meet at 138 Tupelo Ln, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. The buildings in this area are in a circle and people can park anywhere off the circle.What to Bring: Please wear sturdy walking shoes, bring along drinking water, and dress for the weather. About Bill: Bill has been birding since he was 8 years old. He has been on EBird since 2003, with a life list of 1,820 and a US list over 500. Monthly Program | Main Street: A Proven Strategy for Historic Small Towns

PARKING: Both Shepherdstown City parking and Shepherd University Campus parking are available. A map of city parking is here. Meters are not enforced after 6 pm. Spots along High Street are recommended.A map of campus parking is here. You may park in any of the Red lots. C and A are closest to the Byrd Center. Part of B lot is gated, but you may park in any spots near the Facilities building that are not behind the gate.SCHEDULE 6:30 PM: Social time with light refreshments. Presentation Description â This presentation, cosponsored with the Historic Shepherdstown Speaker Series, will address the success of the Main Street movement over the past 45 years in demonstrating the effectiveness of a combination of historic preservation, including preservation of green spaces, economic development, marketing and business restructuring strategies in strengthening the competitiveness of the downtowns of historic small towns and historic urban neighborhoods. Main Street America, with a network that currently includes 1,200 towns in 44 states, continues to adapt to changing economic, demographic and retail trends and pressures facing Americaâs small historic towns â which Ms. Barnes will address in her talk. Main Street America is a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which created the initiative in the early 1980s in response to historic small town downtowns throughout the country where historic buildings were decaying and business competitiveness was not being adequately addressed. In 2024, the network had $7.65B of local reinvestment and 10,126 building rehabs. The Rockefeller Foundation awarded Erin and her co-founders at ioby the Jane Jacobs Medal for New Technology and Innovation. She has also been a freelance writer on climate change andother environmental issues. Earlier in her career, she was a community organizer and public information officer at the Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition in Portland, Oregon.
